MiCA regulation: update on select assets in the EU/EEA

As the regulatory landscape for digital assets continues to evolve, Bitstamp remains committed to ensuring compliance with the Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation.

We’re therefore making necessary adjustments to our crypto asset offerings within the European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA).

This applies only to customers of Bitstamp Europe S.A.

In January, we disabled trading for certain e-money tokens (EMTs) and asset-referenced tokens (ARTs) across Basic and Pro modes, as well as OTC RFQ, in the EU/EEA. This action impacted USDT, DAI, PYUSD, VEUR, VCHF, DGLD, and WBTC, as they no longer meet MiCA compliance requirements for trading.

What follows is an important update regarding custody, lending, and the upcoming conversion of these assets. Below, we outline key dates and what you can expect.

Key dates and upcoming changes

April 14, 2025: USDT Earn Lending program ends

Bitstamp will discontinue the USDT Earn Lending program. All lent assets will be unlent on this date, and any accrued rewards will be credited to the customers’ accounts. Following the conversion to USDC on May 8, you will then be able to lend USDC through the Earn Lending program.

May 5, 2025: Deposits and withdrawals halted

Deposits and withdrawals for USDT, DAI, PYUSD, VEUR, VCHF, DGLD, and WBTC will be suspended. You will still see your balances in your account, but you will no longer be able to transact with them.

May 6, 2025: Automatic asset conversion

To comply with MiCA regulations, any remaining balances in the affected assets will be converted automatically as follows:

  • USDT, DAI, PYUSD, VEUR, VCHF, and DGLD will be converted to USDC, a MiCA-compliant USD-backed stablecoin.
  • WBTC will be converted to BTC.

During the conversion process, your balances will temporarily appear as zero, and a “conversion” entry will be visible in your transaction history. No action is needed on your part.

May 8, 2025: USDC and BTC credited to accounts

Once the conversion is complete, your account will be credited with the respective USDC and BTC balances.

Continuing to support your trading needs

While these changes are necessary to align with MiCA, Bitstamp remains dedicated to providing a robust trading ecosystem. We continue to offer access to over 100 other crypto assets on our platform.

Thank you for your continued trust in Bitstamp as we navigate this evolving regulatory landscape together.
